A Recognized Leader in AFP Education

Carrera has 5 categories of AFP applications, listed here in ascending order of ability to have data drive the personalization of each document for that customer's unique needs:

  1. Basic AFP installation. All jobs in the enterprise are processed using standard IBM page definitions which emulate line (impact) printers.
  2. Basic page definitions. Uses AFP with a page definition built for a particular application. All pages processed in the application use the same data input layout, output format, and electronic overlay.
  3. Complex page definitions. Input data is used to select one of several predefined output layouts and/or groups of overlays. Uses the conditional processing features in the page definition.
  4. Mixed Mode. Uses a page definition but adds some native AFP statements which are imbedded by the application programmer to select AFP features which are not supported in PPFA.
  5. Page Mode. Full page formatting on a free-form basis (the input data personalizes the format of each document). A page definition is not used for this category. Applications may be designed using IBM tools, such as AFP/API or Toolbox, or with powerful PC based productivity tools such as the ISIS Papyrus Designer.

Carrera's AFP class offerings follow these categories and provide an easy-to-follow growth path for the forms design professional.

  • Starting with Category 1, our 1-day Introduction to AFP covers the basics for the forms designer, application or system programmer, or non-programming end-user.
  • The equivalent 1-day class for managers is entitled Manager's Seminar and explores AFP topics from a business prospective. Each student creates a written Document Strategy for your enterprise.
  • The Fundamentals of AFP is a 5 day course which takes you through category 2, with a brief introduction to category 3. Lots of labs and hands on experience.
  • Categories 3 and 4 are the subject of our Advanced Page Definition Applications course and should only be attended after completing the Fundamentals class plus in-field experience preparing AFP applications.
  • Category 5 classes are normally taught on-site for your AFP installation and focus on the particular design tools which are being used and your unique application requirements.
  • If your installation is new to AFP, we offer a Conversion Workshop. This is a personalized, on-site offering which combines any of our class topics with our professional services to help you quickly gain experience while converting from other printer formats, such as Xerox with embedded DJDE.

On Site Classes - Any of our classes are also available at your location and can be personalized to your group's experience levels and application requirements. When you add in travel and living expenses for sending 2 or 3 of your people to our classes, It is often more cost effective to bring our class to your site. For the one low price, you get up to six students in class.
